I work towards helping couples to work amicably, find good compromise and to be co- productive as a way forward in their relationship.
- Individual Couples Counselling
- Combined Couples and Individual Psychotherapy
I work with couples either individually or together.
How it works:
I usually recommend that you both come together for the first session. However if you wish, it could be arranged for you to come separately.
What to expect:
The initial session will be spent with you both equally using the time to explain to me what you think the problem is with your relationship. I will then explain to you my method to couples counselling and after that, I will work with you to make an agreed plan and focus for future therapy to meet your expectations. Choice of couples counselling briefly described below.
Individual Couples Counselling:
Some people prefer to work on their issues by having separate individual sessions. This method has its advantages. One of the main advantages is that the individual can independently discover what may be the deeper root cause of their problems without having the other partner present to interfere, cause further judgement or argument. The person can also make full use of the session without having to share the time. By working this way, the person in therapy will be less reluctant to avoid the issues of concern, and so, much more likely to face the problem that needs to be addressed and resolved in order to improve the relationship with the other. Individual therapy usually helps people to communicate better, and as a result, the couple would then become more inclined to talk over issues and resolve them with fewer disputes.
Combined Couples Counselling and Individual Psychotherapy:
Alternatively, you may prefer to work with both types of therapy, couples counselling, meaning, working both together with the therapist, and additionally having individual one to one counselling. This method of working is the most beneficial approach to couples counselling. Results have illustrated that couples working with both methods often advance forward far quicker, given that they gain greater insight into themselves with individual therapy, and a clearer understanding of the working dynamics of their relationship when couples work together in therapy. Combining, the advantage of individual therapy with joint therapy, the former helps the individual gain insight with ease without the added pressure from the other partner, while the latter supports the couples to observe and understand much more clearly the dynamics that are happening between them, ultimately, helps the couples to find rapid solutions to their problems.
Relationships can become burdensome, conflicting and troublesome, and cause us to feel frustrated, despondent and sad. When this begins to happen, it is usually wise to address the issues before they become worse. Unfortunately, most couples usually turn a blind eye and brush their troubles under the carpet until the problems worsen and become unbearable. When this happens, as last resort, if help like couples counselling is not advanced, then unfortunately the inevitable outcome is usually a separation. Sadly, most separations are very unpleasant and, cause much pain to both parties and their families. To avoid such horrible circumstances from occurring more often than not requires taking therapy.
